At the Brighton Data Forum lightning talks

On Wednesday night there were eight short talks on data-ish things at BDF lightning talks event. The ones that caught my eye:
  • Naked Energy build rooftop water heating systems which look very cool. The data problem is detecting leaks from pressure readings.
  • Anjani Sharma spoke about her history in automating jobs, and demoed n8n for drag-and-drop building of agents. My impression is that it's "if this then that" but you can drop an LLM and chat interface into it as a trigger to drive actions. The demo was going from a one-line chat to adding a calendar event and sending out an email.
  • Vadim Epstein is producing video experiences (not exactly movies) from LLM chat logs. How he does that in near real-time is a mystery to me, as I didn't get to the pub after to quiz him.
  • Business transformation needs stories, Morgan McCarthy told us. He worked in the water industry, and explained that people don't care about the 2 year company vision: tell them why the data/AI project means they won't be spending the night hitting a pump with a hammer while knee deep in effluent. And that they still get to keep their job. Then they'll get it.
  • He also pointed out that CEOs mostly think data products don't deliver them anything.
I also learned about a few other meet-ups in town:

Breaking breadboards looks like a lot of fun for hardware tinkering.
