Bark beetles

Walking in Stanmer Park (cool 1975 map), and I noticed this pattern on a fallen tree:

I thought it was from some kind of sticky plant, but it appears to be made by a bark beetle. The mother lays eggs down the central path, and the larvae radiate out, in a pattern possibly determined sensing and avoiding the munching sounds from siblings.
