Pronunciation: /apoptosis/ and /apotosis/

I was taught (I can’t remember where) that the word “apoptosis” is pronounced with the second p silent. It seems I’m out of date on this.

A BMJ Blog from 2017 quotes a footnote in the original paper:

[…] we propose that the stress should be on the penultimate syllable, the second half of the word being pronounced like “ptosis” (with the “p” silent) […]

All fine so far. But apparently the basis for this is all wrong:

This [footnote] contains two spelling errors and an incorrect assumption.

Apparently: “Debate continues over the correct pronunciation” (Wikipedia).

Which I read as: it’s ok to use either.
